“Successful people live well, laugh often and love much. They’ve filled a niche and accomplished tasks so as to leave the world better than they found it, while looking for the best in others and giving the best they have.” Emerson

The seven women chosen for the Stockbridge Women Project are “successful people”. Through their grace, humor, determination and ability these women have created a role for themselves within the town of Stockbridge in the arenas of politics, the environment, commerce, preservation, the arts and social services. They have made enormous contributions to the quality of life in Stockbridge.

Stockbridge, Massachusetts, is an extraordinary town, known for its physical beauty and rich cultural life. This project not only recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of each of the seven women, but it also acknowledges the role the town has played in their lives.

The project is comprised of three parts: taped interviews, black and white portraits, and introductions by individuals in the community who know the women well. The entire project is a permanent part of the Historical Room of the Stockbridge Library.

It is our hope that viewers will take with them a respect for the accomplishments of the seven women in the exhibit, an understanding of the interrelationship between each woman and the town of Stockbridge, and a broader view of the history of Stockbridge. We believe that these women serve as role models for future generations of Stockbridge women. Julie W. McCarthy , Photographer Judy Spencer, Oral Historian
